The Thirteenth International Fly-Fishing Festival (IF4) is coming to the Princess Cinema this April.

It is presented by the KW Flyfishers, with an introduction before the screening by club president Dan Kennaley, and will be screening at the Princess Cinema on Thursday, Apr. 10, at 7 p.m.

The festival, known as IF4, showcases an assortment of short films documenting the diverse world of fly-fishing culture—the mental and emotional experiences behind the activity.

Since its beginning in 2011, IF4 has grown from a handful of screenings in western Canada to over a hundred screenings across North America and the wider world. Princess Cinema first began screening the festival in 2013.

Princess Cinema owner John Tutt says that the Fly Fishing Festival depicts a wide-ranging community brought together by their collective passion.

“There is tranquil beauty in these films and humour. They take you to exotic places and profile interesting, remarkable and funny individuals.” he said. “And of course, the money shot: a fisherman landing the ultimate prize.”

Several of this year’s films focus on remarkable individuals in the fly fishing community. The film Silent Spotter highlights the remarkable life of Tommy Butan. Butan is a deaf and non-verbal fly-fisher from Xcalak, Mexico, who has managed to carve out a fulfilling role as a successful fishing guide in the area.

The film Time Will Tell showcases a significant fly fishing artist, Paul Puckett. Puckett is a painter and illustrator whose work explores the simultaneously serene and visceral character of fly fishing. He illustrated the IF4 festival poster and is a popular figure in the community.

“The festival gives fly fishers the chance to be inspired,” Tutt said.

While the festival is primarily attended by fly fishing enthusiasts, Tutt recommends the experience even for those without an interest in the activity, to appreciate the beautiful vistas and compelling stories.

Attendees are encouraged to vote on their choice for the best film of the festival, with the opportunity to win prizes at the end of the season. The films shown are featured exclusively at the festival.
