As the winter season sets in, staying warm becomes a top priority for everyone, especially those facing financial hardships. Fortunately, several organizations and community programs in the Waterloo Region provide free winter clothing to individuals and families in need. Whether you’re experiencing financial difficulty, homelessness, or just need extra assistance, there are places in the region where you can find free winter gear such as coats, boots, mittens, scarves and more.

Local Churches & Religious Organizations

Many churches and synagogues in the region, such as Calvary Church, organize free clothing events during the winter months, especially during the holidays, through a program called The Loft by Calvary.

These events are typically open to anyone in need.

Community

Clothing Drives

Throughout the winter season, various local groups, churches and schools organize clothing drives to collect and distribute winter wear to those in need. These drives are often advertised through community centers, social media or local newspapers. Participating in these drives can be an easy way to access free winter clothing.

The Pregnancy Centre and EarlyON Centres

The Pregnancy Centre in Downtown Kitchener and EarlyON Centres are resources for finding free winter clothing for newborn babies to toddlers.

Their clothing room is open to anyone, and they offer a variety of winter wear. The Pregnancy Centre is open Monday to Thursday and EarlyON in Waterloo is open Monday to Saturday. Online groups like Mama KW, where kindness is considered a currency, are also a great way to find free winter clothing and essentials for little ones.

Online

Community Groups

In addition to in-person locations, online platforms like Facebook Marketplace or groups like Buy Nothing KW are great platforms to find free items, including winter clothing. Many people use these platforms to offer coats, boots, and other winter gear at no cost. You can also request specific winter items and sometimes even arrange for delivery or pick up the items directly from someone who gives away clothing and essentials for free.

Schools and Community Groups

Some local schools and youth organizations also hold winter clothing drives, collecting donations from the community and distributing them to those who need them.

Mill Courtland Community Centre offers a free clothing closet for anyone to access.

Freedom Centre

Freedom Centre helps provide low-cost clothing to those in need. Children’s clothing is given free of cost. They also donate free clothing to various agencies. Appointments can be made at freedomcentre.ca.

YWCA Cambridge  and Kitchener

The YWCA provides free clothing to their clients and sells low-cost clothing at the YW Thrift Boutique in downtown Kitchener. The boutique
often places free clothing
on a rack outside
the store.

Low-Cost Clothing at Thrift Stores

Though the cost of clothing has risen at thrift stores in recent years, stores like Thrift on Kent or Mission Thrift offer certain clothing on sale daily. If you look carefully, you can find great winter wear for as low as $2.50.
