Each January, I find myself thinking about our collective understanding of time. We have a long history of organizing our lives around the solar year, a tradition that was set in place by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582—the Gregorian calendar.
It is a system which follows the sun from the winter to the summer solstice and back again.
And although it seems practical, I would argue that viewing time through an astrological lens offers a more holistic perspective.
Astrology is a complex system of overlapping cycles. Daily rhythms, monthly lunar phases, retrogrades and other planetary transits can reflect a deeper, more organic connection to nature’s cycles—ones that are far from binary or linear.
While our civilization has many evolved systems, the ancients’ use of astrological movements as a marker of time seems more integrated into nature’s cycles than our contemporary calendar year.
Astrology urges us to see our individual lives within a broader cosmic narrative. Each experience, transit and phase move into the next cycle of a forever evolving cosmic story.
Moreover, astrology offers a perspective that extends beyond the solar cycle. While the sun, which represents the divine masculine in astrology, plays a vital role in tracking vitality and growth, it is only one piece of a complex puzzle.
When observing astrological cycles, we not only connect more deeply with the natural world but also open ourselves to a worldview that considers multiple dimensions of existence, with each carrying unique meanings.
One thing this calendar year promises is profound transformation. Three big generational and collectively influential planets switch their signs this year. Saturn moves into Aries, Neptune joins it and Uranus begins its transit through Gemini. These alignments historically have brought upheaval, innovation and societal restructuring.
Between 1937 and 1940, Saturn’s transit through Aries saw the rise of authoritarian regimes and the outbreak of World War II. In 1967–1969, it coincided with civil rights struggles, the Vietnam War’s intensification and the Apollo missions.
More recently, Saturn in Aries from 1996 to 1999 heralded the internet boom and Hong Kong’s handover to China.
Neptune in Aries may be similar but signals ideological spiritual upheaval. During its previous transits, the world saw the first English revolution in the 1370’s Peasants’ Revolt and the American Civil War.
The transit saw breakthroughs like Louis Pasteur’s germ theory and Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Neptune’s move into Aries could foster personal and collective healing through technological advancements or a collective urge for justice and equality.
Gemini’s intellectual energy suggests we can anticipate significant advancements in information technology. These innovations could revolutionize communication and fundamentally change how we connect with one another.
As history teaches us, these periods call for courage, integrity and an openness to change. The year ahead promises to provoke a sense of purpose in each of us. To help guide you towards how you can best show up in 2025, here is a toolkit of resources to help you based on your sun and rising signs.
To peek into some energy, we can expect as both Neptune and Saturn move into the dynamic energy of Aries, here is a cosmic mixtape of songs released when these transits occurred.
